We’ve just been listening to the newest EP from this Yonkers NY bread talent. When writing their hooks, most rappers tend to fall back on utilizing a cast of guest vocalists. There is also the shortlist of MCs who, for whatever reason, were convinced that they could sing their own hooks. I’m talking about guys like 50 Cent and Ja Rule, who couldn’t carry a harmony to save their lives. Then there is the even shorter list of rapper-singer hybrids who can actually pull off tackling both their verses and choruses. Enter New York City’s Outasight, an equally gifted rapper and crooner. He gained web popularity thanks to hit mixtapes, such as the funky Further, that led to his signing with Asylum/Warner. And from there he began crafting From Here to Eternity, which marks his proper debut. - Andrew Martin (prefixmag.com)

If you thought Kelly Rowland’s career was relegated to waiting by the phone, waiting for Beyonce’s call to get Destiny’s Child back together (or collecting royalties for that sappy Nelly duet), “Motivation” offers evidence of the contrary. On Monday, she debuted the video to the Jim Jonsin/Rico Love-produced single on BET’s “106 & Park,” and the damp, sweaty video matches the song’s intense sexuality. If this isn’t the year’s hands-down sexiest song thus far, it has to be in the discussion. Rowland, whose sultry voice could get a priest hot (“I don’t want to feeeeeeel my legs”), weaves in and out of the minimal beat (Jonsin did Wiz Khalifa’s sparse “On My Level,” and it’s easy to imagine “Motivation” coming from a session around the same time), setting the table for Lil Wayne’s stuttering, after-hours guest-verse. (Is this the first rap verse to have “rain forest” censored?) Stack the pieces together and it’s an understated knockout that gets sexier with each spin.

Theophilus London is set to make his network television debut TONIGHT on The Late Show With David Letterman (CBS 11:35pm EST/10:35pm CST).
He’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day and the release of his new EP, Lovers Holiday, by performing “Why Even Try” with Sara Quin (of Tegan & Sara). The celebration continues tonight with a sold out record release show at Music Hall of Williamsburg in his hometown of Brooklyn.
“Why Even Try” is the first sample from Theophilus London’s upcoming EP Lovers Holiday. It’s five songs long, and will also include five short stories. “Modern love” is the theme of this song, as well as the stories and the rest of the EP. Sara Quin and London duet over Prince-like echoing snare and wiggling synths. Their boy/girl chorus is surprisingly cooing and sexy. London practices what he preaches, too — he’s playing a Valentine’s Day show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and he’s promised to marry any couples in attendance.
